KEENE VALLEY - On Sunday, July 22, the Keene Valley Congregational Church will welcome national touring/recording artist Martha Gallagher, known regionally as The Adirondack Harper, who will be joined by her husband, guitarist Dennis Gallagher, in a rare duo appearance.
"We have very different musical ideas, so while we've been compatible for many years as a couple, we have not always been compatible as a musical duo," Martha said. "I fell in love with Dennis many years ago over his music, so it's really wonderful to find ourselves back in the space of playing music together. And, it's been a great way to keep those post-Irene blues at bay!"
The Gallaghers' home was severely damaged by the flooding in August 2011.
Martha's career spans more than 35 years, incorporating many musical adventures. Dennis Gallagher plays contemporary finger style guitar; primarily originals, with some old-time and traditional pieces. His guitar is unique in that it has nine strings, instead of the usual six or 12.
The performance will feature solo works by both Gallaghers, as well as a number of duo pieces.
"These two instruments together have a very cool, unique sound," Martha said. "It can be a real challenge to fit that many strings together in a song without stepping on each other, but we really enjoy creating the arrangements. They're really fun to play too, as well as to listen to!"
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and a donation of $10 is recommended.
