LAKE PLACID - A Vermont man faces drunken driving charges after allegedly crashing a vehicle he was driving.

Ray Brook-based state police charged Andrew F. Weinberg, 41, of Middlebury, Vt., with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle on a highway, moving unsafely from a lane and leaving the scene of a property damage accident at 7:26 a.m. Saturday.

Police said Weinberg was driving on Saranac Avenue when he hit a curb and destroyed a barrel of flowers before knocking over a stop sign on Fawn Ridge Road, where his vehicle came to rest. They said Weinberg abandoned his vehicle after the wreck.

Police said they found Weinberg at the Olympic Training Center on Old Military Road, where he was staying, and brought him back to the scene. He wasn't injured in the wreck.

The Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash at 6:03 a.m. Saturday with one truck and 11 members. Crews conducted traffic control until the scene could be cleared and returned to the station by 6:42 a.m.

Weinberg was released on his own recognizance and scheduled to appear in North Elba town court at a later date.
