Bullock golf tourney was excellent

To the editor:

We are still reeling from the excitement and success of Saturday's fifth annual "Bruce L. Bullock Memorial - Redskin Alumni" golf tournament held at Saranac Inn Golf and Country Club. It was the culmination of lots of hard work and the generosity of many!

First off, congratulations to this year's winners: Patrick McHugh, Michael Phelan, Sean Phelan and Dana Tarantelli, who finished with a team score of 60 for a 12-under-par performance. But we dare say that the bigger winners were just about everyone who participated in some way or another! The weather was out of this world, and we all took full advantage of a day on the links to enjoy some laughs, tell some stories and take part in some friendly competition.

This event, which raises money for the Bullock Athletic Fund - benefitting athletic programs and physical fitness ventures at Saranac Lake High School - saw its largest field of players in its short, five-year existence. Thirty-seven teams competed, bringing in 148 competitors, not to mention the countless volunteers, supporters and loads of friends and family in attendance. All told, almost $6,000 was raised toward the fund, and it couldn't have been done without each and every person involved!

Many, many thanks to all of our generous donors, most especially Jay Perras, Chris LaPierre and Renzi Foodservice for donating all of the meat for the event's meals, John and Buffy VanAnden and the Lakeview Deli for donating salads, John Vargo and Eat 'n' Meet Grill & Larder for donating salads, Tom Bell and High Peaks Embroidery for donating all tournament embroidery and embroidered golf shirts for the winning team, and Jim Connors and Chris Stevens and the entire crew at Saranac Inn for making the day possible! Additionally, a huge thank-you to ALL of the local businesses, clubs, organizations and individuals who donated money to sponsor a hole or who donated one of the many door prizes awarded to the participants that day. Your generosity continues to astound us!

Each year the 18th hole is played in memory of or in honor of an individual who has positively impacted the youth of our community, particularly through their involvement with athletics and physical fitness. This year it was played in memory of Jay Ellsworth, and an embroidered flag from the 18th green was presented, at the close of the tournament, to Ben and Will Ellsworth, who competed together that day.

The Bullock Athletic Fund and this tournament were founded in memory of Bruce L. Bullock (1948-1995). Bruce was a beloved teacher, coach, husband, father and friend. Both he and his wife Gail (1949-1996) were strong supporters of the youth of Saranac Lake. This tournament helps to provide for our area high school students by supporting their participation in athletics and physical fitness programs and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Donations are accepted year round. Please contact for further information.

Once again, our sincerest appreciation to everyone who helped to make this year's event such a huge success. We look forward to seeing you all again next year on Saturday, June 29, 2013!

Best regards,

Sara Shatraw, Seth Shatraw and Josh Dann
