Happy Father’s Day

June 16, 2012
Editorial by the Adirondack Daily Enterprise: Publisher Catherine Moore, Managing Editor Peter Crowley , Adirondack Daily Enterprise

"It takes a man to be a dad" is the slogan of the ad campaign by the National Fatherhood Initiative. It shows a newborn swaddled in a soft blanket with an instruction tag for dads to read carefully before raising.

It goes on to say, "This is a baby. It needs you. It needs your love, your touch and your time. Build a birdhouse. Read a book. Go for a walk. Do homework. Play. The more time you spend. The better chance it has of growing up happy and healthy. It grows very quickly. Pay attention, never underestimate the difference you make."

It is a sad commentary that there is a need for such an initiative, and it gives the impression that it is a big and growing problem. However, we hope that is not the case and know that the majority are great fathers, especially in the Tri-Lakes area.

We were surprised by the overwhelming response to our "Draw your Dad" contest in the Enterprise. There were more than 150 entries for ages 4 to 12. This response shows that dads in the Tri-Lakes have kids who worked hard to impress them by honoring their dad with a portrait.

In today's Enterprise you will see just a sample of drawings that children did of their dads for Father's Day. We wish we had the room to print them all before Father's Day, but we will print the rest in weeks to come on Saturday's Kid's Page. After you see your drawing run in the newspaper, you can pick-up your original entry at the front desk.

The decision was difficult with such varying styles, perspective and ages. Winners for the ages 4 to 7 were First Place: Olivia Ellis, Tupper Lake; Second Place: Norah Galvin, Lake Placid; and Third Place: Elli Dukett, Tupper Lake.

Winners for ages 8 to 12 were First Place: Karina Garcia, Saranac Lake; Second Place: Julian Gambacurta, Saranac Lake; and Third Place: Erika Norris, Saranac Lake.

Fathers both young and old have shown their sons and daughters tremendous love and influenced lives more than they realize. This Sunday will be a day that they will be shown how much they are loved and appreciated. We wish all fathers a very Happy Father's Day.
