SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake area has the best skinny dipping and pizza on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, according to a "best of" list recently released by the nonprofit group of the same name that promotes the trail.

The "best of" list includes 10 categories overall and is intended to promote travel to the towns and communities along the 740-mile water trail. The categories range from best place for a sandwich, best sunset viewing location and best weekend paddling trip. The list was compiled through nominations from the public, mainly via email and social media sites. The categories were suggested by members of the public.

The Saranac chain of lakes - Upper, Middle and Lower - was voted the best skinny-dipping location, and Little Italy in Saranac Lake was chosen as the best place to get pizza on the trail.

The only other category winner in the Adirondacks was "best portage." That honor went to the carry between Eighth Lake and Brown's Tract Inlet near Raquette Lake.

The Northern Forest Canoe Trail starts in Old Forge and ends in Fort Kent, Maine.
