SARANAC LAKE - The annual Saranac Lake Downtown Criterium cycling race will take place on Sunday.
Presented by Team Placid Planet, the race is also the New York State Criterium Championship. It follows a 0.55-mile-circuit that includes three left-hand turns looping through downtown Saranac Lake. The start and finish line will be near the intersection of Main Street and Broadway.
The featured event is the Pro-Men's Criterium at 1:35 p.m., when professional cyclists battle it out for 50 laps. The Men's Cat 5 Criterium starts the day's racing action at 8 a.m. Racing will consist from professionals to a kid's criterium at 12:20 p.m.
A total of 150 racers have signed up, and with race-day sign ups that number could swell to 200, according to race coordinator Hal Schmidt.
"The numbers continue to grow each year," Schmidt said in a press release. "This year the numbers reflect two things: the race is gaining recognition, and, of course, a great weather forecast."
Complementing the racing will be a street festival at Berkeley Square. In addition to local vendors, Placid Planet Bicycles will provide free bicycle repairs in the square from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local residents and visitors are also encourged to enjoy the shops, galleries and restaurants in downtown Saranac Lake. The Adirondack Carousel will be open and Adirondack Lakes and Trails Outfitters will be holding a standup paddleboard demo day in Riverside Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
