SARANAC LAKE - Michael S. Turmel, 42, of 56 William St., Saranac Lake, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born in Albany on Dec. 30, 1969, he was the son of Ralph Jr. and Helen (Duprey) Turmel.

Mike had been employed as the Program Manager for the Tri-Lakes Center for Independent Living. He graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1988. He later attended and graduated from North Country Community College with business, applied science and massage therapy degrees. He also attended and graduated from SUNY Oswego with a bachelor's degree in History, Psychology and Philosophy. He completed his education at SUNY Albany with a Masters degree in Classical Archeology. Mike was an acting member of the Whiteface Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 789. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Brother and served as Master of the Lodge in 2007 and 2008. Currently, he was the Lodge Historian. Mike gave many lectures at the Lodge. He loved teaching and was an adjunct teacher for North Country Community College at the Adirondack Correctional Facility and at FCI Ray Brook.

He is survived by his mother Helen Turmel of Saranac Lake; three step-brothers: Jeffery Turmel and his wife Kim of Brookfield, Wisc., R. James Turmel and his wife Leigh of Spartanburg, S.C., and David Turmel and his wife Melissa of Albany; several aunts and uncles, including Dale Prividera of Albany, Phil "Bear" and Madge Duprey of Saranac Lake, Stephen Duprey of Saranac Lake, Susan and William Thompson of Altamont, Mary Duprey of Slingerlands, Mya Duprey of Lake Clear and Mario Prividera of Albany; and several nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father Ralph Turmel Jr., his cousin Philip Michael Duprey, and his uncle Charles "Cubby" Duprey.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Mass of Christian burial is set to take place at noon Friday, May 25, at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake. Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery. A reception and Masonic services will immediately follow the burial at the Masonic Hall in Saranac Lake.

Friends wishing to remember Michael S. Turmel may make memorial contributions to the Whiteface Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 789, St. Bernard's School (tuition scholarship fund) or the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad, in care of the funeral home.
