Tupper Lakers to use hearts, feet to fight cancer

May 21, 2012
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

TUPPER LAKE - Walkers will go all night in a battle against cancer when this village's second Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, gets under way June 9.

Teams of residents will start gathering at 6 p.m. that day at L.P. Quinn Rotary Track Field.

Relay for Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during the relay.

Relay for Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups and people from all walks of life to further the American Cancer Society's efforts.

Prior to the event, community members are encouraged to help "Paint the Town Purple" with large purple bows that may be purchased from any team member or by calling Ruth Burnell at 518-332-8338. The bows may be displayed on homes, businesses and light poles throughout the town the week of the relay.

There will be a Community Pancake Breakfast after the relay wraps up at Holy Ghost Parish Center on Marion Avenue from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 10. Tickets are available from any team member or may be purchased at the door for $5.

During the relay, there will be numerous raffles, food items and baked goods. There will be games, bands and DJ Bill Cassell during the event.

Relay For Life's Luminaria Ceremony takes place after sundown, honoring the community's cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that each bear the name of someone who has battled cancer. Luminaria may be purchased for $5 from any team member, by calling Tammy Boucher 518-359-2391 or at Lake.

Tupper Lake's Relay For Life event will also host the Fight Back ceremony, in which a community leader will inspire relay participants with his or her own commitment and will challenge them to take a personal pledge of action - quitting smoking, eating healthier or exercising, for example - in fighting back against the disease.
