PERU - Saranac Lake pitcher Matt Phelan and Peru pitcher Luis Pepen Matos took center stage Saturday in a Champlain Valley Athletic Conference defensive battle.
The two teams went through six and a half scoreless innings until the Indians broke through with a run in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 1-0 victory. Blake Altizer led off the seventh with a walk then moved into scoring position after stealing second. Dom Delello ended the game with a single that brought in Altizer.
"An outstanding high school baseball game," said Saranac Lake coach Bill Wilson. "Both teams played great defensively, committing no errors."
Phelan had a no-hitter going through the first five innings until Mitch Cunningham broke it up with a single in the sixth. Phelan struck out eight and gave up just two hits all day.
Pepen Matos earned the complete-game victory after striking out four without walking any batters.
Logan Wood had two singles and Grant Strack had the other for Saranac Lake, which fell to 4-7 on the season.
