GIRLS LACROSSE

Canton 11, Saranac Lake 8

SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake girls lacrosse team hung tough Friday against Canton but had to settle for an 11-8 loss.

The two teams played evenly for much of the first half, with the Golden Bears taking a narrow 6-5 advantage into halftime.

"Canton is a strong team and I was glad to see our girls step up to the challenge," said Saranac Lake coach Amanda Zullo. "This was our best all-round effort yet this season."

Kylie Sapone collected three goals and one assist, Kaleigh Woodruff scored two goals and Rita Munn had a goal and an assist to lead the Red Storm offensively. Elena Beideck and Marisa McDonough each added one goal.

"This was a huge step forward for our girls," Zullo said. "Finally, they see and believe what we coaches have been saying all season."

Sheila Decker took care of the goaltending duties for the Red Storm and finished with 18 saves.

"Canton's offense is strong," Zullo said. "Our defense did an awesome job generating turnovers."

Kate Lombard, Tess Knight and Molly McMasters each scored two goals for the Golden Bears, who improved to 7-5 with the victory.

Saranac Lake is 3-8 with three games remaining.
