RAY BROOK - Saranac Lake's golf team had a relatively easy time winning its first seven matches on the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference schedule. But getting past their eighth opponent proved to be anything but easy for the Red Storm's golfers.
Playing on its home course for the second day in a row, Saranac Lake slipped past Plattsburgh 3 1/2-2 1/2 to stay unbeaten and improve to 8-0 in the league with two matches remaining before the Section VII championship tournament.
The outcome basically came down to a missed chance here and a made shot there, as all six matches were decided by two strokes or less. In the contest between each team's top player, Red Storm sophomore Dustin Fischer fired a one-over par 37 to claim a one-shot win over Hornets senior Ethan Votraw, the senior captain of the defending Section VII champion Hornets. Fischer started the day by sinking a 30-foot put to eagle the first hole, and ended his round draining a 10-footer on the ninth green to clinch the win and a point.
In the second match, Plattsburgh's Lucas Wood topped Saranac Lake's Kyle Dora 44-46. In the third match, Saranac Lake's Ethan Sawyer erased a three-shot deficit heading into the sixth hole to eke out a 42-43 win over Mitch Maggy. The fourth match ended in a tie with Saranac Lake's Devin Darrah and Plattsburgh's Nick Dodd each carding 45s. Plattsburgh's David Carpenter then topped Matt Clark of the Red Storm 42-44, which put the match on the shoulders of the No. 6 players on each team. In the final pairing, Blake Gregory came through with the win for Saranac Lake, topping Plattsburgh's Andre Poirier 45-47.
Saranac Lake's next match will be on the road Tuesday against Ticonderoga.
