Saranac Lake softball rolls past Patriots

SARANAC LAKE - Nicole Viscardo went 3-for-4 at the plate and earned the win from the pitcher's circle to lead the Saranac Lake softball team to a 9-2 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory over AuSable Valley on Wednesday.

The Red Storm scored four runs in the first inning and tacked on three more in the third to take control of the game. Saranac Lake outhit the Patriots 10-6 and only committed one error.

Viscardo struck out eight batters in four innings of work, before yielding to Brittany Tschirhart in the fifth. Tschirhart struck out two and allowed just one run.

Megan Moody contributed to the Red Storm's offensive output with two hits, while Christina Rabideau and Jordy McDougall each had two RBI. Viscardo drove in one run.

Alexis Facteau had three hits for AuSable Valley.

Saranac Lake improved to 6-4 on the season with the victory.


Tupper Lake 10, Madrid-Waddington 1

MADRID - The Tupper Lake softball team got back to its winning ways Wednesday with a 10-1 Northern Athletic Conference victory over Madrid-Waddington.

The Lumberjacks (4-2 NAC, 6-2 overall) scored five runs in the second inning and added four more in the fifth.

Kelsie St. Louis was the winning pitcher after striking out four and walking two. The senior also doubled in the second inning and had two RBI.

"Our defense was incredibly strong tonight, with Jesse Weigand in left and Carley Aldridge at short putting in a great effort, letting nothing go by them," said Tupper Lake coach Darci Hart.

Paige Dukett and Sam Sanford each had two RBI for the Lumberjacks, who have won five of their last six.


Peru 8, Lake Placid 3

PERU - The Lake Placid softball team led early, but eventually relented on the way to an 8-3 CVAC loss to Peru on Wednesday.

The Blue Bombers took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the second inning, but Peru responded with two in the bottom half and four more in the third.

Kelsey Taylor had two RBI to lead Lake Placid offensively.

Shannon Bombard singled, tripled and drove in three runs for the Indians.



Ticonderoga 3, Lake Placid 1

LAKE PLACID - The Ticonderoga baseball team was on the winning end of a 3-1 defensive battle Wednesday in a Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory over Lake Placid.

Ticonderoga's Jordan Woods came through with the decisive hit in the sixth inning when his triple brought in Miles Austin as part of a two-run inning.

The Blue Bombers scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh after Ryan Damp and R.J. Reid connected for back-to-back doubles. Damp finished the game 3-for-3.

Lake Placid pitcher Ryan Meyer took the hard-luck loss after striking out nine in six innings of work. Each team had four hits.

Lake Placid fell to 3-8 with the loss.


Tupper Lake 8, Madrid-Waddington 4

TUPPER LAKE - Tim Larkin had a strong game on the mound Wednesday to lead the Tupper Lake baseball team to an 8-4 Northern Athletic Conference victory over Madrid-Waddington.

Larkin, a senior, limited the Yellow Jackets to no hits through the first five innings and gave up four hits over the final two.

Adam St. Pierre tripled and had two RBI and Brandon Duchaine collected two singles and drove in three runs.

Tupper Lake improved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in NAC games. Madrid-Waddington is 4-1.

Madrid-Waddington 187, Tupper Lake 67

TUPPER LAKE - Tupper Lake's Randy Charland, Lindsey Maroun and Kristin Bickford each won an event Wednesday as Madrid-Waddington swept the team scoring.

Charland won the 800-meter race in 2:42.4 and tied for second in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, 9 1/2 inches. Teammate Bryan Geiger jumped the same distance to finish behind Connor Maskell who recorded a 16-9.

Geiger was also second in 110 hurdles with a time of 19.2 seconds, trailing Madrid's Zachery Marcellus with a 17.5.

Maroun turned in the top time in the 200 with a 24.8 and finished second in the long jump with a 14-9. Brittany Pierce won the girls long jump with a 15-5.

Bickford cleared 4-6 to take first place in the high jump.



Heuvelton 14, Saranac Lake 2

HEUVELTON - The Heuvelton girls lacrosse team downed Saranac Lake 14-2 on Wednesday in a Section X match.

The Red Storm fell to 3-7 with the loss. Heuvelton is 4-8.

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid girls and boys tennis teams split at home Wednesday in matches against Saranac Central.

The Blue Bombers girls claimed a 3-2 win over the Chiefs girls, while Lake Placid' boys fell by the same score in another tight competition.

Natalia Smith and Serena Hollowell posted wins at No. 1 and 2 singles for Lake Placid, while teammates Cameron Brooks and Grace McGrew clinched the win by triumphing at No. 2 doubles.

Smith, a senior, defeated Saranac's Ana Dorrance in a pair of 6-1 sets, while Hallowell topped Kayla Napper 6-4, 7-5. The Bombers got their doubles win when Brooks and McGrew defeated Lena Menia and Olivia Klooster 6-2, 4-6 and 6-2.

Emma Newell picked up a point for Saranac in No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Joan O'Leary, and Saranac's No. 1 doubles team of Kristen Napper and Aimee Eggelston edged Blue Bombers Victoria O'Leary and Brenna Garrett 7-5, 6-3.

The Lake Placid girls improved to 3-1 with the win.

Nick Stosiek won at No. 1 singles and David Knapik and Steven Jelinek triumphed in No. 2 doubles in Lake Placid's 3-2 setback to a strong Saranac Central boys tennis team.
