Chiefs edge Red Storm in girls track

SARANAC - Nickie Trudeau was a three-time winner and Vanessa Salamy, Sam Martin and Blair Moody each won twice as the Saranac Lake girls track and field team fell 70-62 in a Champlain Valley Athletic Conference meet Tuesday against Saranac Central.

The Chiefs won the boys meet 118-14.

Trudeau won the 100-meter race in 13.2 seconds, the 400 hurdles in 1:07.3 and was part of the winning 1,600-meter relay team that clocked a 4:29.7.

Martin, a sophomore, ran a personal best in the 800 with a 2:36 to win the event. She was also part of the 1,600 relay.

"Samantha continues to improve and is one of the toughest girls on the team," said Saranac Lake coach Peter Frenette.

Salamy won the 100 hurdles in 17.1 and ran the second leg of the 1,600 relay.

Moody joined Annie Frenette, Maria Mairurano and Selena Baillargeon on the winning 400 relay that finished in 56.9 seconds. Moody also won the long jump with a jump of 14 feet, 1/2 inches.

Kasandra Cunningham had a personal best in the high jump and Regan Kieffer had a PR in the discus.

Ben Monty was the lone boys winner after stopping the clock in 11.6 seconds in the 100.

Saranac's Jake Spear broke the Section VII long jump record Tuesday with a 22-5. Ticonderoga's Jonathyn Granger set the old record in 2010 with his jump of 22-4 1/2.

The Red Storm girls are 2-1 on the season, while the boys are 1-2.

CLINTONVILLE - The Lake Placid girls team won a hard-fought road victory Tuesday against AuSable Valley with a 61-60 victory.

The Blue Bombers won the 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relay events.

In the 400 relay, Esther Munoz, Gabby Armstrong, Rachael Ashley and Kendra Manning beat AuSable Valley with a time of 55.9 seconds.

In the 1,600 relay, Ashley, Jillian Goulette, Manning and Armstrong won in 4:43.4.

In the 3,200 relay, Gabby Armstrong, Nina Armstrong, Goulette and Ashley topped the field with a time of 11:38.

Ashley, who won in four events, also took first in the 400 in 1:06.6. Nina Armstrong took third.

Nina Armstrong also won the 3,200 in 12:56.9 and Jillian was third in the 200.

Manning won the 100 in 13.5 and was second in the 800.

Gabby Armstrong, Sage Miller and Molly Smith swept the 1,600 race. Armstrong paced the field with a time of 6:27.2.

Esther Munoz placed second in the 400 hurdles and first in the long jump. Briana Munoz placed second in triple jump and third in long jump and discus.

In the boys meet, AuSable Valley won 115-15.

Blue Bomber Trevor Knapp took first in the 100 with a time of 11.8 and the 200 in 24.9.

Prescott Doyle, Kyle Prinsen and James Montefusco each won three events for the Patriots, who improved to 1-2 overall on the season.

Prinsen and Montefusco were part of the 400 relay team and Montefusco and Doyle were part of the winning 1,600 relay team.

The Lake Placid girls are 2-1 overall and 2-0 in league competition, while the boys are 0-3, 0-2.
