TUPPER LAKE - A 25-year-old Tupper Lake man was charged with rape after two incidents last week.
James P. Matthews was arrested at 3 p.m. Monday and charged with the following:
-one count of rape in the first degree, a class B felony
-two counts of criminal sexual act in the first degree, a class B felony
-attempted criminal sexual act in the first degree, a class C felony
-forcible touching of another's sexual/intimate parts, a class A misdemeanor
-unlawful imprisonment in the second degree, a class A misdemeanor.
The first two charges stem from an incident in which Matthews allegedly forcibly raped a woman in her 20s outside on Cliff Avenue after leaving the Old Northern Pub in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 22, said village police Chief Tom Fee.
The other charges stem from an incident early Friday morning in which Matthews allegedly tried to have sex with a woman in her 30s against her will but was unsuccessful, Fee said. He said that incident happened at a residence in the area of Lakeview Avenue.
Fee said Matthews knows both women but would not comment on whether they were friends or not.
"I'm not anticipating additional charges, but we are still in the process of investigating it," Fee said.
Matthews was arraigned in front of village Justice Michael Demars and posted $50,000 cash bail and was released. He is scheduled to appear in village court May 14.
