SARANAC LAKE - Contrary to the rumors going around town, Paolo Magro says he's not selling his Nonna Fina restaurant.
Magro revealed Thursday, however, that he has decided to turn over its operations to two of his long-time employees: Joe Thompson and Jacob Stanbro. Magro said he will continue to own the business.
"It was something I wanted to do myself," Magro said. "I have a lot of things going on, and it's time to back off a little bit. And I also wanted to help these people who have worked for me for a long time. It's a way to give my appreciation back."
Magro said the terms of the 10-year lease agreement, which he declined to disclose, were reached several weeks ago. The deal was finalized Thursday when the business's state liquor license was transferred to Thompson and Stanbro.
Magro opened Nonna Fina, which is located in what used to be a former Burger King restaurant on River Street, in January 2009. He also owns the Little Italy restaurants in Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, and two downtown buildings in Saranac Lake: the former Alice's restaurant at the corner of Main Street and Broadway, which is now home to Pink, and the Sears building and its adjacent parking lot on Main Street.
Thompson has worked as a cook and has overseen the kitchens in all of Magro's restaurants over the past eight years. Stanbro started at Little Italy four years ago before moving to Nonna Fina, where he's the general manager.
"Paolo gave us a great opportunity, and we're going to take advantage of it," Thompson said.
"We're excited; we're nervous," Stanbro said. "Paolo has taught us a lot. We have a good team over here. It's a great property and an excellent location. He's set us up for success."
Both men said Nonna Fina's customers shouldn't expect to see any major changes at first, though they may add some specials and new offerings on the menu over time. The restaurant's bar has recently been renovated, and Stanbro said they plan to add a bar menu.
Magro said he won't be a stranger and plans to visit Nonna Fina on a daily basis to offer his advice and expertise.
"I want to thank everybody in Saranac Lake and around Saranac Lake," he said. "I appreciate the support they've given to Little Italy and Nonna Fina."
