LAKE PLACID - No one was injured and there was minimal structure damage when a fire broke out late Friday morning at the private residence of 156 Mount Whitney Way.
The fire started when construction workers on the site were soldering copper flashing, causing it to heat and ignite the wood under the flashing. The fire spread to the house, damaging a 2-foot-by-1-foot section of the exterior wall with minimal smoke damage to the house.
Lake Placid firefighters extinguished the flames using two fire extinguishers and also cleared the house of smoke.
The village Highway Department assisted in the call by sanding the private road, providing a safer path for the fire trucks to the house.
At the scene, head fire driver Brad Jaques emphasized the importance of sanding and salting during the winter months in case of emergencies.
The Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire call at 11:17 a.m. with four trucks and 23 members while the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid to the Lake Placid fire station until members returned to the station at 12:59 p.m.
