’Tis the season

November 26, 2011
Editorial by the Adirondack Daily Enterprise: Publisher Catherine Moore, Managing Editor Peter Crowley

Now that your Thanksgiving Day is over, it's time to prepare for the holidays. Ready or not, there is no escaping it in the Tri-Lakes area. Between Jack Frost nipping at your nose and all of the festive events happening in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake, you can't help but get into the spirit.

Make sure giving, decorating, attending events and shopping are on your "to do" list for the holidays. The Enterprise can help you get through that list more easily.

As far as giving, we can be your one-stop shop for donating money, toys and time. We have a drop-off box for new toys for needy children that will be processed and distributed to the Holiday Helpers charity. No need to wrap it, but if batteries are needed, please include them as to not disappoint a little one when opened on Christmas Day. This year Santa picked a hard-working elf, Dawn Rogers, to lead the way for Holiday Helpers. She can be reached at 518-891-4807.

If you want to donate your time during the holidays, consider ringing a bell to collect money for the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army has helped many people locally with emergency food and shelter, especially flood victims this year. If you want to get on the schedule to ring the bell, call Chanelle Palyswiat at 518-891-7273. The kettle is at the Enterprise office at 54 Broadway, Saranac Lake, and can be set up outside the Post Office or Kinney Drugs, thanks to the nice folks at those places.

Decking the halls should be on your list to create the ambience of a sparkling village. We are hoping to see homes and businesses draped with lights for our Sparkle Village Lighting Contest. A group of Enterprise employees will be judging on Dec. 16 and 17. To be included, call Susan Moore at 518-891-2600 ext. 19 with your name and address. Our judges will then get in our Enterprise van and do drive-by shootings (with a camera) for our picture page in the Saturday, Dec. 24 issue.

Our newspaper is the information hub of all the holiday events in the Tri-Lakes area, so make sure you get the paper to find out all the details. In Saranac Lake there is Home for the Holidays, in Lake Placid there is the Holiday Stroll, and in Tupper Lake there is a Christmas Craft Fair at Big Tupper Ski Lodge and a window-decorating contest.

Santa is also waiting to read local kids' letters to him in the Friday, Dec. 16 Enterprise. Please tell your children and grandchildren to drop their letters off at the newspaper office by Friday, Dec. 1.
