SARANAC LAKE - Sara F. Ames, a nurse practitioner in the Oncology Department at Adirondack Medical Center, a member of Adirondack Health, recently earned the designation of Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner.
Ames, who was born and raised in Saranac Lake, earned her bachelor of science in nursing degree from New York University, and later a master of science in nursing through the Oncology Nurse Practitioner Program at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa.
Prior to her arrival in 2005 at AMC, she worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. At AMC, Ames has worked in the Intensive Care Unit, Ambulatory Surgical Unit, Endoscopy and currently the Oncology Department. In addition, she is a member of the recently formed Palliative Care Team at AMC.

Ames is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society and Sigma Theta Tau, an international honor society for nurses.
The AOCNP exam tests knowledge vital for a nurse practitioner to provide an exceptional level of care and support for patients receiving a range of treatments in the Merrill Oncology Center at AMC.
The AOCNP certification is available to nurses who have:
A current, active, unrestricted RN license
A master's or higher degree in nursing from an accredited institution
Successful completion of an accredited nurse practitioner program
A minimum of 500 hours of supervised clinical practice as an oncology nurse practitioner.
Ames resides in Saranac Lake with her husband Paul and daughter Essie on their small farm. She has a great passion for all of the outdoor opportunities the Adirondacks have to offer, including skiing, hiking and camping.
The Merrill Oncology Center at AMC provides full-time, physician-supervised oncology care with two oncology certified Nurse Practitioners.
