Crosswalk replaces school bridge

SARANAC LAKE - The state Department of Transportation has replaced a damaged footbridge near Petrova School with a new crosswalk at Dorsey Street and LaPan Highway (state Route 3).

The crosswalk is marked off on the road and with "school crossing" signs.

"The crosswalk will remain active for the foreseeable future and a crossing guard is expected to begin work there soon," the DOT said Friday in a press release.

The footbridge lost chunks of concrete underneath it on Aug. 24 when it was struck by part of an excavator that was being hauled behind a dump truck. That put the bridge out of commission for the new school year that began Tuesday. The bridge runs from Leona Lane to Petrova School and was heavily used by students living in the French Hill neighborhood.
