ELIZABETHTOWN - More than 100 residences in Essex County are now uninhabitable after Tropical Storm Irene.
The storm led to severe damage to at least 187 homes and 18 camps countywide, according to county Manager Dan Palmer. Of these, 108 are now uninhabitable. At least 57 businesses were also severely damaged.
These numbers are preliminary, and Palmer said they will go up.
The storm led the AuSable River tributaries to flood and cause particularly severe damage in the towns of Jay and Keene.
Home and business owners who suffered losses due to Irene which aren't covered by insurance qualify for federal Individual Assistance. Businesses can get low-interest loans to help rebuild, and homeowners and renters can get loans and grants for housing repairs and some other costs.
