Road to Wilmington reopened, to AuSable Forks still closed

August 30, 2011

State Route 86 between Lake Placid and Wilmington reopened this morning.

However, a couple of major roads were still closed, according to state police in Ray Brook. State Route 73 is still closed from Keene Valley to the Adirondack Northway's Exit 30. People can get between the town of Keene and the Northway by driving state Route 9N to Elizabethtown and getting on the interstate at Exit 31.

Also, state Route 9N between AuSable Forks and Jay was still closed as of this morning. The bridge on state Route 73 near the ski jumps, outside of Lake Placid, is open to one lane of traffic at a time.

Franklin Falls Road is closed, as is River Road in the town of North Elba. A number of smaller side roads are also closed in the towns of Keene and Jay. Also, the bridge at the end of Adirondack Loj Road in the town of North Elba, beyond the South Meadow Road intersection, was washed out.

Flooding triggered by tropical storm Irene Sunday wreaked havoc in much of Essex County, leading to millions of dollars in damage and cutting off some communities.

For further information on road closures, updated throughout the day, visit Essex County's website at www.co.essex.ny.us.
