ALTONA (AP) - Authorities say two people were killed when their vehicle plunged into a river while crossing a storm-damaged bridge.

State police say the two were travelling on Devils Den Road in Altona sometime around midnight Sunday and didn't notice that the bridge crossing the Great Chazy River had been partially washed away by Tropical Storm Irene.

As they entered the bridge, police say the vehicle was pulled into the water and swept downstream a thousand feet by the extreme current.

Rescuers found the vehicle early Monday and located the bodies farther downstream. They were identified as 23-year-old Mikita C. Fox, of Wikemikong, Ontario and 24-year-old Danine R. Swamp, of Nedrow, New York.
