LAKE PLACID - Forest rangers are currently assessing Tropical Storm Irene's damage to the Adirondack backcountry, but one thing they do know is that the bridge over Marcy Dam was washed out Sunday and is gone.
The wooden dam itself is still intact in the High Peaks Wilderness, state Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman Dave Winchell said.
Winchell said the DEC hasn't had any reports of injuries as a result of the storm. He said his department is continuing to urge people to stay out of the backcountry because of the risk of landslides.
