WILTON (AP) - State police say an upstate New York businessman is dead after he jumped in front of a tractor trailer on an interstate highway.

Maj. William Sprague says Wednesday that witnesses saw 64-year-old Lawrence Sampson of Halfmoon crouching in front of his car on the right shoulder of the Adirondack Northway's southbound lanes in the town of Wilton about 7:30 Tuesday night.

Sprague says that as the 18-wheeler approached, Sampson jumped in front of it and was killed. The speed limit is 65 mph on that stretch of highway, in Saratoga County about 30 miles north of Albany.

Sprague says Sampson's death is being investigated as a suicide and the truck driver, 31-year-old Chad Clark of Philo, Ohio, faces no charges.

He says Sampson owned Pearle Vision businesses in Albany and Queensbury.
