Essex County public health director leaves

ELIZABETHTOWN - Essex County is once again looking for a public health director.

Karen Levison, who was hired in December after a months-long search, has left to become Saratoga County's public health commissioner, according to Essex County Manager Dan Palmer. Her last day was Friday.

The interview committee that hired Levison has been reassembled and is chaired by Lewis Supervisor David Blades, who heads the Board of Supervisors' Human Services Committee.

"We've got some applications," Palmer said. "We're working our way back through the process."

Palmer said the position has been difficult to fill.

"They're hard to get," Palmer said. "They really are. It's really brutal competition out there for them."

Public Health Director Kathryn Abernethy retired in 2009. Deb Endsley then became interim public health director, serving in that position until Levison was hired.

The job pays between $79,000 and $83,000 yearly.
