APA to host meeting today on Jay mine proposals

August 23, 2010
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

RAY BROOK - The state Adirondack Park Agency will hold a public meeting this evening on Cold Spring Granite Company's plans to expand its mining operations in the town of Jay.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the town of Jay offices on School Lane in AuSable Forks.

Cold Spring Granite is proposing a mine expansion and a new rock-crushing operation at its existing mine sites, which are located about 3.25 miles north of the intersection of state Routes 86 and 9N.

The APA, in a news release, said activities proposed by the company include 24-hour wire sawing operations for several weeks at a time throughout the year, as well as certain blasting and rock breaking. Blasting operations would take place Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Rock crushing would occur in the mine pit on the west side of state Route 9N and be limited to time periods in the spring and fall from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. A maximum of up to 80 days per year would be allocated for crushing operations. Rock breaking would occur at both mine sites and also be confined to specific time periods.

At the meeting, the APA says Cold Spring Granite will provide an overview of the project, after which the public will be able to comment on the plans. The agency will also accept written public comments, which can be sent to Tom Saehrig, Environmental Program Specialist, P.O. Box 99, Ray Brook, NY 12977.

The application and supporting information are available for public review. Contact Tom Saehrig at 891-4050 for more information.
