SARANAC LAKE - Out its 14 elementary schools and two high schools, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg chooses one teacher a year for a special honor.

This year, that Teacher of the Year award goes to Cathy Nason, the kindergarten teacher at St. Bernard's School in Saranac Lake who has taught several generations of kindergarteners and first-graders there for more than 30 years. Before that, she taught at Holy Ghost Academy in Tupper Lake. She lives in Lake Placid.

The Rev. Tom Kornmeyer, pastor of St. Bernard's Parish, surprised Nason with the news in front of the students at a prayer service and assembly Monday morning, prompting vigorous cheers from the students.
