Red Storm girls top Canton in lax

SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake girls lacrosse team jumped all over Canton early and then kept up the pace to earn a 10-5 victory over the Bears in a Section X home match Wednesday at Schroeter's Field.
The Red Storm surged out to a 5-0 lead during the first 10 minutes of the match and held a 7-4 edge at halftime. After intermission the Red Storm scored three more times while holding Canton to just a single tally.
Saranac Lake senior Hillary Pond paced the Red Storm with two goals and three assists, and Shannon Muldowney netted three goals. Kylie Sappone and Alex McFaddin, a senior from Lake Placid, scored twice and added single assists, Jackie Dubee scored once, and Elena Beidcek notched one assist.
The Red Storm defense was led by Ashley Pittman, who made 17 saves to earn the win in nets, and Alex Grossman, who played a big role in keeping the Bears off the scoreboard early.
Tressa Goodlen led Canton with three goals, and Rachel Draper and Kathleen Lapinski each chipped in with single tallies for the Bears.
The Red Storm improved to 4-2 in league play.

Saranac Lake 5, Saranac 1
PLATTSBURGH - Saranac Lake's golf team evened its record at 1-1 in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference, topping Saranac Central 5-1 Wednesday at the par-36 Barracks Course in Plattsburgh.
Michael Phelan earned medalist honors for Saranac Lake, playing the layout at even par for a 36-57 win over Paul Carter in the No. 2 match. Phelan, a junior, recorded seven pars, a birdie and one bogey during his round. Also for Saranac Lake: Patrick McHugh recorded a pair of birdies in his 38-43 win over Wes Aubin in the top matchup; Maddie Rocque defeated Kolby Keysor 45-50 at No. 3 for her first win of the year; Braxton Tissot edged Jordan Wright 51-52 in the fourth contest; and Devin Darrah slipped past Nick Lees 48-50 in the No. 6 pairing for his first win as a Saranac Lake team member.
Cameron Keysor took the Chiefs' only point with a narrow 48-49 victory over Red Storm golfer Kyle Dora.

TUPPER LAKE - The Tupper Lake boys and girls were swept by Canton at home Wednesday in Section X track and field action.
The Tupper Lake girls dropped a heartbreaker, as they won 13 of the meet's 16 events but still saw a deeper Canton team eke out a 146-142 win. Meanwhile, Canton's boys won all but three events en route to a 121-65 win over the Lumberjacks.
Amanda Moeller and Kyla Kenyon paced the Tupper Lake girls with three individual wins.
Moeller won the 100 and 400 meters and triumphed in the long jump; while Kenyon topped the field in the 100 and 400 hurdles and the 200 meters. Hanna Klossner took two individual firsts for the Lumberjacks, winning the 800 meters and the high jump, and Erica James also picked up two wins for the 'Jacks in a sweep of the shot put and discus.
Katie Stuart also earned a win for Tupper Lake in the triple jump.
Tupper Lake took two of the meet's three relay contests. In the 4x100 relay, Klossner and Stuart joined Kristin Bickford and Samantha Ormsby for a Lumberjack win, and Bickford, Klossner, Stuart and Kenyon teammed up to win the 4x400 relay.
Canton won the 3,200 relay, while Chelsea Huyck and Aimee Beaudette each earned an individual win for the Bears.
Damien Ashlaw led the Canton boys, as he swept all three jumping events, and ran a leg on the Bears' winning 4x100 relay team. Matt Pierce also came up big for the winners, taking individual wins in the 1,600 and 800 meters and running a leg on the first-place 4x400 relay.
Bryan Geiger, Austin O'Neill and Nick Bourbeau each earned an individual win for the 'Jacks. Geiger finished first in the 110 hurdles in 20 seconds, O'Neill placed first in the 200 in 26.8, and Bourbeau triumphed in the discus with a heave of 85 feet, 3/4 inches.
Dillon Woddruff, Josh Facey and Jerred Wilson also chipped in with an indvidual win each for Canton.
Softball
Peru 6, Saranac Lake 1
SARANAC LAKE - The Peru softball team remained undefeated with a 6-1 victory over Saranac Lake on Wednesday.
Peru pitcher Kelly Kezar yielded just four hits and struck out six Red Storm batters on the way to the pitching victory. Peru improved to 7-0 with the win.
Jen Peryea, Chelsea LaFountain, Sarah Drake and Mallory Cotter accounted for the Saranac Lake hits. The Red Storm dropped to 2-5 on the season with the loss.
Northern Adirondack 9, Lake Placid 8
ELLENBURG - Northern Adirondack scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday to edge Lake Placid 9-8.
Kayla Rabideau ended the game when she came in on a fielder's choice after singling, stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch. She scored when teammate Brittany Charland hit a ground ball in the infield.
It was the first win of the season for Northern Adirondack.
Danielle Balestrini and Molly Ploof each doubled for the Blue Bombers, who had a total of five hits on the day.
Lake Placid overtook the lead with a five-run third inning that made the score 7-3. Northern Adirondack answered in the fifth inning with four runs to tie the game. The Bombers jumped ahead with a run in the sixth, but couldn't hang on for the victory.
Northern Adirondack had eight hits against Lake Placid pitcher Alexis Nichols.
