New door to secure police station

TUPPER LAKE - This weekend will mark the first time the Tupper Lake police station will go unmanned in 42 years.

The Franklin County 911 service started dispatching for the police department on weekend nights about a month ago, but the department had to keep someone in the station during that time because it could not be secured.

Now, with a new door that was installed Wednesday, the station can be shut down in a secure way so police officers are free to patrol through the night.

The county is handling dispatch for the department from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. every Friday through Sunday on a six-month trial basis. The department says it should mean a cost savings of about $30,000 a year.

At least they didn't waste any money on a fancy "Ring the Buzzer" sign.
