LAKE PLACID - Lake Placid native Andrew Weibrecht is on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated, joining fellow alpine skiing Olympic medalists Lindsey Vonn, Bode Miller and Julia Mancuso.
The cover shot, for an article titled "Fast Company" by Tim Layden, features Weibrecht standing at the left of the foursome, wearing the bronze medal he won in the men's super-G at the Vancouver Winter Olympics last week.
Meanwhile, local officials have scheduled a parade in Weibrecht's honor down Main Street in Lake Placid on Friday.
"The town, the village and everybody here is excited for Andrew, and this is a great way to show him how proud we are of him," said Jon Lundin, spokesman for the state Olympic Regional Development Authority.
The parade will begin at 4 p.m. at the large municipal parking lot on Main Street, travel through the downtown, and finish at the Cottage Cafe, which is owned by Andrew's parents, Ed and Lisa Weibrecht.
A ceremony will be held at the Cottage featuring local and regional politicians and dignitaries, followed by photo opportunities and autograph sessions with Weibrecht.
"What he did was amazing, and we couldn't be any happier for him," Lundin said.
Weibrecht is the first Lake Placid resident to win an Olympic medal since 1972, when Pete Sears took silver as a goalie on the U.S. hockey team.
