Long Lake receives new snowmobile grooming fleet

POSTED: January 29, 2010

LONG?LAKE?- The Town of Long Lake Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department recently introduced the Pisten Bully Paana to its snowmobile grooming fleet.

Bill Brandt of Mohawk Ltd of Chadwicks, delivered the Pisten Bully Paana on Jan. 14, eager to get the groomer out on the trails.

The Pisten Bully Paana is a smaller, more compact groomer and Long Lake's Paana is the first in North America to pull a drag designated for snowmobile trail grooming. The Paana is typically used on cross-country ski trails, but considering its smaller size, Brandt boasts, "It has a lot of power for a little rig and the drag handles beyond expectations."

The Paana uses a Cummins four-cylinder, 115-horsepower, in-line engine and is thrifty on fuel and friendly to the environment meeting the highest emission standards for 2011. "It's packed with power and will be able to navigate Long Lake's narrower, more challenging trail system," the Town of Long Lake Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department said in a prepared release.

It is only 6 feet, 10 inches wide conforming to New York state's expectation that groomers not exceed 8 feet in width when on wild forest lands.

Long Lake boasts more than 70 miles of snowmobile trails in and around the Long Lake area, connecting to Newcomb on C8B and Raquette Lake also on C8B and Old Forge on Route C7, running along the train tracks.

The town of Long Lake has made a commitment to support snowmobiling and the winter economy by capitalizing on the growing popularity and resurgence of snowmobiling for family fun.
