The week of January 25th marks the three-year anniversary of "Did You Know" articles on vehicle and traffic law and traffic safety in general. These weekly articles are written by the Franklin County Traffic Safety Board's vice-chairman, Dave Werner, and approved by New York State Police Troop B Sergeant Kevin Mulverhill and now number over 150.
In Franklin County, you see these articles weekly in the Malone Telegram (Monday's) and in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise (Saturdays). However, they are sent electronically well beyond Franklin County. Media receiving these articles include the Tupper Lake Free Press, Time-Warner, WICY radio, the Internet outlets of NewzJunky and NorthCountryNow and the Plattsburgh Press-Republican (occasionally).
Additionally, the articles are sent to traffic safety boards in the following counties: Westchester, Orange, Clinton, Ulster, Livingston, Essex, St. Lawrence, Rockland, Dutchess and Geneseo. They also go to the Federal Highway Administration, the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee and the Safety Council of Central New York.
The articles may also be found on the Franklin County's Web site at www.franklincony.org and can be researched at this site by going to the Traffic Safety Board and clicking on the "Did You Know articles," which appear alphabetically by title and include the date the article was released to the media.
And just how difficult is it to find enough material to write a weekly traffic law and/or safety article? I wasn't sure what to expect at the beginning of this program three years ago, but after over 150 articles, there is still much to write about. Ideas come from my observations while driving, reading through the NYS manual of Vehicle and Traffic Law, seasonal articles, such as winter driving, members of the Traffic Safety Board, friends and family, emails from readers, changes in vehicle and traffic law, and sometimes just common sense things. The one common theme throughout the articles is that they have something to do about traffic law and/or traffic safety. I welcome suggestions from everyone. It doesn't mean I will write about everything suggested, but if it is of interest to you it just might be of interest to others.
Traffic law and traffic safety is much like the weather. It affects just about everyone, and therefore is of interest to most people. Writing about traffic has certainly increased my knowledge of traffic laws and traffic safety. Hopefully, the articles do the same for those that read them.
