Community Store on the home stretch

POSTED: January 8, 2010

To the editor:

First of all, we want to send a huge thanks to the dozens of folks, both those here in the Tri-Lakes and the many others across New York state, who have made an investment in the Community Store project over these last few months. We're excited to announce that we've now raised $417,300 toward our goal of $500,000, and we plan to continue to push forward with the hope of completing our Investment offering by late spring and opening the doors of the Community Store by early summer. For any folks who are still considering investing but haven't yet done so, now's the time if you want to be a part of this pioneering effort. For more information about how to do so, please visit our Web site at www.community-store.org.

As many of you know, our long-term intention is to locate the Community Store in the development across from the Union Depot train station that's being planned by HES Ventures. Until that's completed, we'll need a temporary location. Although we can't make any firm commitments until we've closed our public offering, we have had preliminary conversations with Dan Groves, the owner of Olympic Tree and Land Management, about the possibility of leasing his showroom space if it's still available once the offering has been completed.

On Jan. 16, Susan Waters and Brian Mann will host a night of trivia at Will Rogers to benefit the Community Store. The winning trivia team members will each receive a share in the store. We have room for a few more teams of eight as of this writing. Admission is $20 per person. If you'd like to find out more, e-mail Melinda Little at mlittle231@aol.com or give her a call at 891-0197.

In the meantime, we wish you all a very happy new year and look forward to opening the doors of the Community Store in Saranac Lake before the year is over.

Melinda Little, on behalf of the Interim Board

Bababooey.... it means we may be able to buy what "we want for choices" and not what a few enviromentalist, dropoffs, implants, tree huggers, or whatever you want to refer them as beside one of our fellow humans.......

The way that the land swap went and the carrousel (is going In the wrong spot) ,the lawsuits yet resolved, the lost tax base, the mandates shoved down our throats, the useless grants that will cost us taxpayers in the long run, when is the "Sleeping Giant" going to wake up and smell the coffee??????? This place has run so bad for so long , I am ready to start kicking butt..... Grow up you smart ones!!!!!

Does this mean we'll be able to buy underwear? That seems to be the biggest gripe around here. Why are Saranac Lakers going through so much underwear, anyway? Never mind. I'd rather not know.

Kudos to everyone working hard to start the community store in S.L. Hats off to you all for trying to do something positive for our area, that will benefit us all. Good luck!

The wise folks around here did NOT buy shares. Once the door close, finalizing the failure of this useless endeavor, I hope those who bought into it read the fine print - you lost your monies on (another) useless cause.

And what about the "sweetheart" land swap that was pushed through the village board? The taxpayers are holding the bag for an overvalued strip of useless land, no tanks are moved, no construction! It stinks to high heaven.

How long is $500 K capital going to last, after paying for a lease, inventory, wages, etc.? Remember, this is New York State, the most unfriendly state in the country for businesses. Mark my words, there'll be lawsuits over this cs once some of these people realize they were duped into investing--

Freddie - you could be an investor too.

So Susan Waters is an investor in the Community Store? Yet, she's on the Village Board and has pushed the moratorium on big-box retail stores. Conflict of interest? Whose interests is she representing? Her financial interests as an investor, or the people in the Village who want a major retailer?

With a project that has attracted so much subjectivity you would think a well known local reporter and his political wife would stay out of the fray. But no, a few Saranac Lakers will continue making ill-thought-out decisions for the masses.
