Mercy Care for the?Adirondacks commissions two parish nurses

LAKE?PLACID?- On the evening of Nov. 14, Mercy Care for the Adirondacks commissioned two parish nurses in a dedication ceremony held at St. Margaret Convent Chapel in Lake Placid.

Registered nurses Donna Constant and Virginia McDaniel were honored for completing 34 contact hours of training based on the International Parish Nurse Resource Center curriculum.

They join four other active volunteer Parish Nurses in the Tri-Lakes trained by Mercy Care including Janice Connors at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Tupper Lake and Patricia Beneshan, Patricia Loud, and Susan Seacord at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid.

Sr. Catherine Cummings, RSM, Ed.D., R.N. directs Mercy Care's Faith Community Nurse and Friendship Volunteer Programs. She is qualified as a Parish Nurse Educator.

Working in partnership with their clergy, congregations and churches, Mercy Care Parish Nurses, in collaboration with church congregations, parishes and community organizations, evaluate the medical, physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of elder persons, meet those needs as they are able, and refer them for services as needed. Parish Nurses do not perform direct or hands-on healthcare and do not duplicate other nursing or medical services in the community.

Mercy Care's role in the Parish Nurse Program:

Mercy Care carries out its mission to enhance in every dimension the fullness of life of elders living in their community independently through a Friendship Volunteer Program, a Parish Nurse Program, and an Education and Advocacy Program. Mercy Care has over 50 volunteers in the Tri-Lakes. They have contributed over 2000 hours of service to their elder neighbors.
