There weren't any competitors close to him in the last leg of the XTERRA race Sunday morning.
On the second and final loop, when Boobar emerged, Jay resident Kevin Bouchard-Hall was on his tail.
"I went a little easier on the second half of the run, on cruise control," Boobar said. "I (stopped) to my fix my shoe and take a drink, and all the sudden I look back, and there's a guy six seconds behind. I had a lot of energy left because I had been taking it easy. Going down the stairs, I tried not to trip because I didn't want to slip and lose the race in the last 20 seconds."
Boobar, a nordic ski coach at Stratton Mountain, had mistakenly thought his closest competitor was seven minutes behind him. Bouchard-Hall was actually not that far behind him.
"I didn't see him until coming out of that top loop," said Bouchard-Hall, who was competing in his first XTERRA. "I gave it all I had but I didn't have enough time. He must have lollygagged the last bit because he's a pro."
Boobar finished the backcountry triathlon in two hours, 17 minutes and 35 seconds. Bouchard-Hall was just five seconds off that time.
The XTERRA included a 1,500-meter swim on Mirror Lake, then competitors went into the woods off Mirror Lake Drive for the 25-kilometer mountain bike ride and a 10-kilometer run in the forested area behind the Olympic Center. The race finished up in the Olympic Oval in front of the Lake Placid High School. The event drew 107 competitors.
In the women's portion of the race, Erin Nielsen of North Haverhill, N.H., finished in 2:39 to take the top spot. Angela Schnuerch, of Naples, finished second with a time of 2:41:49.
"I tried as hard as I could to stay ahead of her," Nielson said. "I got caught on the first lap of the last race and I didn't want that to happen again."
Overall, competitors seemed to enjoy the first-ever XTERRA in Lake Placid, hosted by Try and Du It Multisports, of Plainview.
"Our goal is to make this an annual event," said Race Director JP Latkovic. "We hope this year will allow us to grow for next year and bid for the northeast regional champ race," "We think it would draw in 300 to 400."
XTERRAs are the backcountry versions of triathlons and that was evident Sunday as competitors emerged from the woods scratched and muddy.
The run included steep hills and a couple hundred yard long bog, while the mountain bike course was mainly single track. Even the swim had a bit of a wilderness feel to it as a few ducks got mixed up and swam into a group of swimmers near the finish.
"I thought it was a great course," Boobar said. "I think the run, it might have been a tad long, and the bike might have been a tad short compared to a U.S. Cup style race but each race can be unique. Like this had this big mud bog, which was definitely tricky. I fell in that because my shoe was almost sucked off. I saw a guy running out there in socks. He might have lost both shoes in there. So it was a great race. I'll definitely come back."
