Ortloff sentencing delayed until Nov. 9

Former state Assemblyman and Parole Board member Chris Ortloff's sentencing on federal child sex charges has been pushed back from Aug. 11 to 2 p.m. on Nov. 9.

The sentence was delayed due to a scheduling conflict, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Spina told the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh.

Ortloff was originally scheduled to be sentenced on April 23 on a federal charge of online enticement of minors for sex, but his attorney, Andrew Safranko, requested the first delay to further prepare for sentencing.

State police arrested Ortloff, 61, on Oct. 13, 2008 at a motel in Colonie where, authorities said, he was waiting to meet two preteen girls for sex. He pleaded guilty on Christmas Eve 2008 and was then released to house arrest at his Plattsburgh residence on a $100,000 personal-recognizance bond. He was returned to jail after the delay in April.

The minimum sentence for Ortloff's charges is 10 years' imprisonment with a maximum of life, plus a $250,000 fine. With the time he has spent in pre-sentencing custody, if he is sentenced to the minimum, he could be released seven-and-a-half years after his sentencing with good behavior.

Authorities say that, starting in June 2008, Ortloff repeatedly began e-mailing a police investigator whom he believed to be the mother of two preteen sisters. When state police showed up at the motel to arrest him, he reportedly answered the door naked and had condoms, vibrators, lubricant, a camera and assorted sex toys in the room.

A Republican who projected a tough-on-crime message, the Lake Placid native represented the North Country's 110th Assembly District from 1986 until 2006, when then-Gov. George Pataki appointed him to a six-year term on the Parole Board. The state paid him $101,600 a year for that part-time job and will pay him $53,136 a year for the rest of his life, even in prison. This pension is guaranteed by the state Constitution.

I agree with amraksays. The only way to restore justice, is to remove or arrest the cabal of criminals who've usurped our system. I gave a copy of Broken Bench to the Dickinson Town Judge shortly after it was printed. I thought he would be interested to see that Derek Champagne was blaming the illegal activity outlined in the article, on bus driver/town justices like him. He didn't bat an eye. Since then his property has gotten much nicer.

No Connors, I don't think the rank and file people who supported him are pedophiles, but considering the pattern established by politicians, it would be irresponsible for law enforcement to ignore the possibility that he might be part of a coven of area child molesters. Look at the many varied cases involving dispatchers, CO's, rogue State Police officer/thieves, and people like the Romeo guy who re-offended at the age of 72, along with the many teachers and media personalities prosecuted for sex crimes. If you can't see a pattern, it's because you don't want to see a pattern. Investigate, prosecute, repeat.

Contrary - are you implying that people who supported Ortloff are also pedophiles simply because of that support; regardless of whether they knew of his proclivities or not?

If the local community can change the constitution to bring more electricity to Lake Placid, they should be able to change it to take this wannabe rapist's pension away. I only hope he isn't using the time to blackmail like minded politicians, into supporting his plea for leniency. Or is this a sign that investigations are continuing, with more arrests expected? If they are, I hope they investigate the judges and politicians who stood shoulder to shoulder with him, while promoting unlimited detention for pedophiles. Craig hated gays while trolling for them, Foly wrote legislation against pedophiles while seducing page boys, and Ortloff promoted unlimited detention for sex offenders while searching for his next pre-teen victims. Keep looking Mr. Investigator...and don't forget the people who kept him in office for so many years.
