Accused campground stabber’s death was due to car crash (update)
A man police suspected of stabbing two other men two weeks ago at a state campground in Black Brook died from blunt-force trauma to the head and torso, state police announced Friday.
He suffered those injuries from crashing a Dodge car into a house while fleeing the scene of the stabbing, state police said. The house was on Clintonville Road in the town of AuSable.
Vermont's chief medical examiner, Dr. Steven Shapiro, determined Stephen R. Gourlay's cause of death in an autopsy Friday and ruled the death to be accidental, according to state police.
Gourlay, 41, of Peru, died Thursday at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.
The incident took place on the night of April 24 at Taylor Pond State Campground in the town of Black Brook. Police say Gourlay stabbed George Goyette, 45, and his son Richard, 20, during an altercation. George Goyette was wounded in the stomach and Richard Goyette in the chest, police said. Both Goyettes were treated for their injuries at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh and released. Gourlay was originally taken to CVPH as well but was then transferred to Fletcher Allen for more intensive treatment.
Gourlay was never charged.

It leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Who instigated the fight? Was he stabbed also? The story states that he died from the accident, but did he crash because of loss of blood from a stabbing? If so, who stabbed who first? I knew a man who was stabbed in front of the Cripple Creek in Malone in the 80's. He pulled the knife out and pounded his attacker into the dirt before requesting a ride to the hospital. His attacker also went to the hospital, but was arrested and sentenced to many years in prison. The news articles have been skimpy on the details of this case. His death means we may never know what actually happened. Kharma or creepy?
