Bear foot found on school field

Police confirm it’s animal’s foot amid rumors it was a child’s foot

By JESSICA COLLIER, Enterprise Staff Writer
POSTED: April 30, 2009

TUPPER LAKE - Rumors were flying around Tupper Lake Wednesday night that a child's foot was found on a softball field at L.P. Quinn Elementary School.

The remains were tested by pathologists at the Adirondack Medical Center today and were found to be the hindquarters of a small bear, said village police Chief Tom Fee.

The remains were reported to police at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, and state and village police and several school officials went to the scene to investigate.

Tupper Lake Central School District Superintendent Seth McGowan said the foot was mostly just bones with a little flesh attached. In the dark, the remains could have easily looked like a human foot, he said.

"It wouldn't surprise me if someone found a bear foot laying around right now," said Ed Reed, who studies bears for the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Reed said this is the time of the year when DEC workers often find yearling bears who are weak after a long winter hibernating in their dens.

"Bear feet do look like human feet," said Don Stunzi of Paul Smiths, who worked with bears for 30 years in Pennsylvania.

2 days ago, I found a full grown dead male bear in the neighbors driveway. I brought it to the attention of the Dickinson Town crew and helped them load it in their truck. This one died where it was struck, but I imagine others probably make it into the woods and die later. This one took three of us to load in the truck, and after we were done, I retched all the way home and into the shower. Dead road kill bears smell really bad.

This same thing happened in Chateaugay Lake a year or so ago. When it happened there, it turned out that dogs had found remains dumped in the woods by a hunter.

"Bones and a little flesh" sounds like this foot was probably decayed.

But we still have the right to bear arms.

Sounds like an illegal Bear trapping and out of season to boot. DEC should fully investigate this as a poaching crime.
