SARANAC LAKE - "We got a call from a neighborhood person reporting a black bag in the bushes at the corner of (Park Avenue) and Catharine (Street)," said village police Sgt. James Law. "We sent an officer up there. He saw the black bag. It was slightly moving. When he touched the bag, it meowed."
The police officer cut the nylon bag open with a pair of scissors and found a small black cat wearing a white collar.
Leslie Karasin was walking down the hill when she noticed the bag set back from the sidewalk near a stone walkway in a resident's garden on Park Avenue.
"I thought it was odd," she wrote in an e-mail to a number of her neighbors. "Then, I noticed it was moving."
It was around 8:10 a.m. Thursday. It had been raining the entire night before, and the bag was soaked through.
Village police brought the young female cat to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society. Shelter manager Lena Bombard said the cat was hypothermic - her body temperature was around 95 degrees Farenheit instead of between 100 and 102, which is normal.
"That's why we named her 'Lucky Girl,'" Bombard said. "If she stayed in the cold condition she was in, she would have perished."
Bombard said the cat's body temperature was gradually brought up to normal with warm-water bottles and by holding her in a towel until she stopped shivering.
"She purred the whole time," said shelter worker Jenn Ivimey. "She was so good."
Feeding an animal with hypothermia can be dangerous, as the food is too much of a shock to its system. Bombard said the cat's body temperature was back to normal by 2 p.m.
"We gave her a good meal," Bombard said. "She scarfed it down."
Law said there are no markings on either the bag or the cat to indicate where they might have come from.
Ivimey said the cat was probably someone's pet before and shows no signs of having been a stray.
"She's good about a litter box," Ivimey said. "She doesn't scratch or bite or anything," and she has no health problems that they have noticed.
Bombard said the bag was found well off the road, in the bushes.
"Whoever did this did this intentionally to harm the animal," Bombard said.
Bombard said she doesn't recommend abandoning animals, but if someone wanted or needed to, they "could have brought it someplace safe instead of leaving it to die"
The cat has white on the tips of the toes on her black paws, and a white tip on her tail.

Judges do not pass hard enough sentences on people who do this...they get a slap on the wrist and can go back to doing it again. Didn't abuse to animals become a felony a few years ago, if the animal's life was endangered? I would say that this cat's was and if the person is apprehended, the judge ought to throw the book at him/her.

Sickos who abuse animals will also abuse people. Find this creep, stuff him/her in a wet bag and leave him/her out on a cold night. Ugh. Humanity. We can indeed be a rotten species sometimes...

People are pondscum. I'd like to take a baseball bat to the clown that did this to a freaking defenseless critter. I hope he's reincarnated as a mouse.
