GOP backs Sprague for DA, Hommes for sheriff

The Essex County Republican Party has endorsed Kristy Sprague for district attorney and Henry Hommes for sheriff.
Hommes, the incumbent, beat out challenger Michael Tyler by a wide margin; Sprague beat out incumbent Julie Garcia and Brian Barrett, garnering more than twice as many votes as Garcia.
Sprague got 8,254 votes, Garcia 3,623 and Barrett 215, according to the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh. Hommes got 11,369 votes and Tyler 723; another 422 were voided. More than 100 people attended the meeting at the Old County Courthouse in Elizabethtown, according to county Republican Chairman Ronald Jackson.
Barrett and Garcia have both said they plan to run without the party's backing.
"I like to go with the positives," Jackson said. "I would say that Mrs. Sprague did a better job of convincing people that she was the best candidate. She talked about her experience and what she would like to do if she becomes DA to improve things."
Jackson said he considers Garcia a friend, "but some people thought there were problems in the DA's office and somebody else may be able to do better."
Jackson did not mention any examples, but one that has drawn headlines is that Garcia has drawn fire on a political level recently for publically challenging county Clerk Joseph Provoncha, suggesting that he no longer be in charge of administering the Stop-DWI program funding due to the possibility of conflicts of interest with the various positions he holds.
The primary will be in September, the general election in November. Jackson said he expects a primary for the DA position.
"The advantage of the endorsement is, it means the party will work with the endorsed candidate," Jackson said. "The committee people will help get signatures; it takes a certain amount of signatures to get on the ballot. For those not endorsed, it's a little tougher to get on the ballot and a little tougher job to win the primary without the endorsement of the party. Whoever wins the primary, we support that person in the general election whether it is that (endorsed) candidate or not."

The number of bars in Lake Placid...Troop B's Peter Person in trouble for excessive use of State vehicles to do discretionary field work at the Liquor Authority...hmmm. If I was a DA, I would consider the possibility that Mr. Person was working to destroy the concept of competition, by selectively picking and choosing which competitor loses their license. Individuals should never be allowed to use the power of our Government, to disenfranchise anyone, let alone destroy the bedrock of our free enterprise system. He didn't have to do the field work that got him in trouble, he chose to...why? Is it the politicization of another branch of Government? Or an extension of the already politicized Just-Us system?

Local, you keep forgetting to call me a drunk. After all, if it weren't for a legal gateway drug, I wouldn't be an ex-con to begin with. I was a teenage alcoholic first, and everything else kinda fell into place. I stopped drinking and getting in trouble at the same time. How many bars are in Lake Placid? People talk about gateway drugs, what about gateway communities?

BTW, I've also been a NYS certified teacher, parks and recreation maintenance supervisor for years, electrician, licensed security guard, owned 2 businesses, and used my recent down time to provide care of my college bound daughter who's already gotten scholarships to Clarkson, and has an eye on Harvard law. We have friends who've worked at the school for years. I never said education is bad. The arrogant attitude of educated people who've been turned into predators because they think we're all stupid? That's a different story.

But you're wrong Mr. Local. If you don't like the Constitution, you really don't have to live here. I didn't teach my son to love honor and serve his country in Iraq, to watch organized criminals, eliminate the concept of justice in America. It's his duty to protect America's freedom, it's my duty, since I taught him so well, to make sure the Constitution he serves, is an actual working document. This is America. Every opinion counts. Even yours Mr. Local. My Constitution, and yours, makes it so.

Native, you're right. I liked Deb Whitson but her campaign was awful. As for contrary, the opinions of a self described ex-con, drug addict, unemployed high school drop out don't count.

You never know, maybe Ms. Garcia is cooperating with the FBI investigation into ORDA. That would be enough to have her attacked, lynched, drawn and quartered, barbecued, and served on a platter at the Mirror Lake Inn. If she'd tried to press charges for the theft of the Union dues, it would'a been even worse.

Garcia only got that job because her last opponent ran a particularly nasty campaign. Even people who didn't like her could no longer support her opponent.

Come on, this is really retribution for Garcia upsetting the apple cart 4 years ago with the Republican powers that be thought they could easily flip Ron Briggs out of DA and into the County judgeship. Garcia has done a good, competent job. There is no reason to drop her for Sprague. Plus, Sprague is SO interested in backing Essex that she'll move to Essex County - only if she wins!!
