SARANAC LAKE - Samuel Ian Duprey wasn't due to enter the world until Jan. 10, but his mother Anne Marie Nightingale-Duprey said her ultrasound technician had it right when she predicted he would be born on the first.
Anne Marie and her husband Anthony Duprey, Jr., both of Vermontville, welcomed their first son together at 2:47 a.m. on Thursday at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, beating out the other new year births in the region.
"We were looking around at all the other hospitals to see if we were the first," Duprey said. "We saw there was one in Auburn that was born around 2 a.m., but none around here."
Samuel gets his first name from Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, of whom Nightingale-Duprey is a fan. Ian is her father's name.
"He needs a nickname," Samuel's older brother Justin Lee Duprey, 5, suggested while sitting in the hospital room on Friday. "Lightbulb!"
Samuel's parents weren't sure the nickname would stick, although they seemed to enjoy it.
He weighed in at eight pounds and one ounce and measured 23 inches, with a head full of hair.
Nightingale-Duprey said she knew she was going into labor as she was working on Wednesday afternoon. She works at Mountain Lake Services.
"I knew at 1:30 in the afternoon that something was going to happen," she said; however, she didn't go to the hospital until around 9:30 that night. She had been hoping to attend a friend's New Year's Eve party later that night.
"It was a family-friendly thing, and the kids were invited and everything," she said.
"But she was pacing back and forth, and I said, 'Nope, we're going to the hospital,'" he husband added.
Justin, a kindergartner at Lake Colby School, said he thought having a little brother was cool. Nightingale-Duprey said he has already watched and learned how to hold Samuel and bathe him.
As for having their home baby-ready, the Dupreys said they've been preparing for a while.
"He has clothes for two years and diapers for six months, a car seat and a crib - this boy has everything," Duprey said.
The new mother said she wasn't sure when she was going to be discharged from the hospital but said she is excited to start the new year with the new family addition.
"It's neat he's the first baby of the year," she said, "but I'm just excited to have him."
