McCain for president
By Ogden Newspapers Inc.Character, as judged by a candidate's record, counts when voters are called upon to fill the most important office in the land, that of president of the United States. We believe Sen. John McCain's character is just what our nation needs - and we endorse him for president.
McCain's record says much more about his character than do his comments on the campaign trail, though they provide a clear blueprint for leadership. Here, in brief, are the salient points about McCain:
His record as a Navy aviator during the Vietnam War is more than a stirring story of patriotism and selflessness. McCain's behavior as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam demonstrated that, at his core, he puts duty, honor and country above all else.
Strangely, his opponents have begun to mock McCain's record as a maverick, even as they call upon the federal government to be less preoccupied with partisanship. But McCain's 25 years in Congress show a pattern of eagerness to work with politicians of both major political parties to get things done. On controversial issues, McCain has been a motivator - not just a proponent - of change since long before the term became a slogan.
National security, a key concern of most Americans, has been McCain's strength. Most Americans are fully aware of his tenacity in fighting for what is right in defense policy, as well as for members of the armed services. That sometimes has forced him into conflict, even with leaders of his own party. McCain, of course, was an early critic of the failed strategy in Iraq - and a proponent of the new, successful plan.
McCain recognizes that the size of government needs to be reduced - not expanded, as his opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, wants. Smaller government leads to lower taxes, allowing Americans to keep more of our money and grow our economy.
Had Congress reacted properly to an initiative McCain helped lead in 2005, the current financial crisis probably would not be occurring. McCain was a co-sponsor on Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, which would have reined in many of the abuses involving "subprime" mortgages. Liberals in Congress defeated the measure.
Troubling questions remain about the character of Obama. He was elected to the Senate only because of efforts by the Chicago political machine. His personal associations involved one - closer than Obama will admit - with a leader of the 1960s Weather Underground terrorist organization. That man, William Ayers, has commented that, "I don't regret setting bombs." And Obama's association of many years with his pastor, the anti-American Rev. Jeremiah Wright, ended only when the relationship was brought to light by the news media.
McCain's character, on the other hand, has been one of working closely with those who would build America up - not tear her down.
It is not too much to say that the contest for president this year pits a dedicated liberal politician, Obama, against a veteran servant of the public - McCain. Obama is easily the most liberal of the 100 senators. His running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden, is a close second.
Simply because McCain's character has been one of service to the people - not to a political party or the gigantic federal bureaucracy - we urge residents of our area to cast their ballots for John McCain, the leader Americans need.

Here's how much Ogden Nutting and his family care about the Adirondacks, and the environment For decades their papers in West Virginia papers have been denying that coal burning causes acid rain. They have vigorously defended the practice by coal companies of blowing off the tops of mountains, polluting everything down stream. They own the Pittsburgh Pirates, and have been milking the franchise for years with no care to quality if it interferes with profit. And that's just the beginning of the putrid actions of this ultra-right cabal. These are the folks who jammed the McCain endorsement down the throats of their local editors.

Tree Hugger, there is simply no way that Adirondack residents can pay for the costs of delivering even the most basic of services to themselves. Even with the preponderance of government jobs among residents, the counties, towns, and villages cannot deliver essential services without raising property taxes and local sales taxes, a burden that few can afford. Political pride over a faulty belief in being independent from the larger world will not educate Adirondack children, plow the roads, or deliver drinkable water to your taps. Don't vote or pontificate against your best interests. If you do you have been duped.

TEastman - it is an excellent point. The party of large government certainly has the ADK park in their pocket due to dependence on hand-outs. Is a philosophy of political survival for the more people on the government payroll, the more votes for greater government. "When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." - Ben Franklin How about voting upon principles instead of who will be sending funds where ever the bureaucratic special interests are. Tax money would be much better used in the hands of charitable organizations than a government that pads it's own pockets and those of their friends. How can you not like a candidate running on a platform of cutting out government waste and special interests?

The Adirondack Region is and has always been dependent upon the many grants and the extensive social net delivered to it by both the federal and state governments. The free enterprise snorting and anti-government breathing Adirondackers endorsing the McCain/Palin ticket seem not to realize how the Park would fare in a society that was based on decreased federal and state taxes. If your property taxes are currently pricing you out of towns just wait till a decrease of federal and state funding hits the local governments. Consider issues beyond the simplistic rhetoric of partisan web sites and embittered sound bites.

Hey treehugger. I believe your philosophy is also known as "the sky is falling". I am sure the nation is doomed if Obama is elected. Pestilence, floods, marxism will destroy the fabric of society as we now know it. I hope that you are getting your fallout shelter ready. Be careful- the evil forces of destruction are planning their march up the Northway right now!

Iraq is far from worse today. Death tolls are down significantly and remain below levels of military losses during the Clinton administration. Both candidates agree that the war is changing focus to Afghanistan. Reality is that the war has little influence on the election. What is relevant is that Obama has much less executive and leadership experience then Palin as his experience is limited to far left wing agenda and running for office. He also promises a marxist agenda which both he and Biden brag about. It is scary that and inexperience man with so many sketchy associations could even be considered a plausible candidate for president. His agenda includes changing the constitution to push his socialist agenda which is something, that as an American I find deplorable.

As a Saranac Lake resident in his thirties, I must say that this endorsement is disappointing and does not reflect the sentiments of the vast majority of local people who I know. The current online poll reinforces this. At this moment it states that 68% of online voters support Obama. Pretty unbelievable that the endorsement doesn't address Palin's readiness nor the McCain's general ineffectiveness managing his own campaign. I have respected McCain's work in the Senate for years, but I am sorely disappointed by leadership as a presidential candidate. I hope that he will remain in the Senate as a voice of compromise and practicality. We desperately need inspiring leadership and tremendous intellect from our next president in these troubling times. How fortunate for our country that Obama has risen to meet this challenge. Wednesday morning we will wake up to a historic day.

DW- here is a little known "fact" for you. In 2004, the dems were in the minority in congress. Even in 2006, they held such a slim majority that they couldnt override a GWB veto. That is why they couldnt stop "your President's" war. It is simple math, buddy. But simple may be too much of a stretch for you.

I would rather have a smooth talker, a man who INSPIRES people, a person with at least the APPEARANCE of hope. But others seem to want a man who was fit for the presidency 8 years ago but not any more. A man who dives in recklessly by picking a VP candidate with no leadership skills, no broad appeal, no sense of right and wrong. Poor John McCain. I admire his service to our country. But we need someone with vigor, hope and vitality to lead this country out of the morass that was created by the true dim bulb at the helm for the past 8 years.

And at least McCain has Foreign policy knowhow-Please consider this quote- "My friends, we have reached a crisis, the first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War." --on Russia's invasion of Georgia, forgetting crises such as the Gulf War, 9/11, and the Iraq war, Aspen, Colorado, Aug. 14, 2008

He can't even keep track of his houses for the love of god....And let's not even mention Sarah the Plumber or whomever he is counting on for support lately...

It's not a McCain ticket. It's a McCain/Palin ticket. Whether or not it's customary to include the VP nominees in a presidential editorial, it should have been included this time. To not include it implies that it's not an important issue to consider when voting.

McCain is " and a proponent of the new, successful plan." in Iraq. That's all one needs to know about the good Senator and who ever wrote this article. There is no success in Iraq-it's more of a mess now then ever. McCain will simply keep us in Iraq ala Bush/Cheney. The real problem folks is Afghanistan and moreso Pakistan, which has the nukes, along with the Taliban, Al Queda and an unstable govt. Get your heads out of the sand RIghtys-
