Rally for Hope surpasses $55,000 goal

September 22, 2008
By PETER CROWLEY, Enterprise Staff Writer

LAKE PLACID - Accompanying the memorials to cancer victims and the testimony of survivors, luminaria glowed all along the inside edge of the Sheffield Olympic Speedskating Oval Saturday night.

The luminaria - paper bags with candles inside - also spelled out "2008 HOPE" on the steps from the Oval up to Lake Placid Middle/High School. Written on each paper bag was a dedication to someone with cancer.

This was the scene at the end of the American Cancer Society's Rally for Hope, when it was announced that donations solicited for the event had surpassed the goal of $55,000. The money raised in this annual event goes to cancer research.

There were also musical performances on the Oval, with the Saranac Lake Madrigal Singers and the Dust Bunnies closing the event.
