Congressional candidates Treadwell, Gillibrand to debate Oct. 23

By NATHAN BROWN, Enterprise Staff Writer
POSTED: August 29, 2008

SARANAC LAKE - There will be at least one debate between Kirsten Gillibrand, the Democratic incumbent in New York's 20th Congressional District, and Republican challenger Alexander "Sandy" Treadwell.

It will be from 9 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, sponsored by the Albany Times Union and WMHT, the Capital Region's PBS station. It will be broadcast live from WMHT's studios in Troy.

"I welcome opportunities to talk directly with voters, and am committed to making sure voters have an opportunity to learn more about my plans to cut taxes, create jobs, improve our national security and take better care of our troops and veterans," Gillibrand said in a prepared statement.

Treadwell has called for a series of public forums to be held in all 10 counties of the district. Gillibrand has not committed to this, but has said she hopes to hold more debates as her schedule permits.

"People across the district deserve the opportunity to hear the views of the candidates standing side by side," Treadwell said in a press release. "Town hall forums will give voters the chance to ask questions of the candidates and will put the focus directly on the issues, which is what this race is about. On any number of issues such as taxes, drilling or homeland security there are real and important differences between the policies I will fight for in Congress and those of my opponent."

The 20th Congressional District stretches from the Adirondack towns of North Elba and Keene in the north through the Hudson Valley and from the Massachusetts border though the Catskills west to Broome County. The district includes all or part of Saratoga, Dutchess, Columbia, Rensselaer, Warren, Washington, Essex, Greene, Delaware and Otsego counties.
