Fire department fundraiser takes the cake

August 12, 2008
By Dora Mose, brightonbuzz08@

Welcome once again to the Brighton Buzz! I trust everyone is taking advantage of the rare times of sun and dry weather.

White Pine

Centennial Celebration

The folks at the White Pine Camp celebrated the centennial this weekend with a dedication of a beautiful rock garden at the front gate to the camp. Despite the rain, a larger than expected crowd of people turned out to take part in the celebration of sights and music. A cook out fundraiser was put on by the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department with a great turn out and selling out of food. They had to send members out to the store to purchase more food and sodas to sell.

Thank you to everyone who supported the fire department and the White Pine Camp, a good time had by all!

A taste of good old-fashioned home cooking found in Gabriels

August Miller of Gus' Adirondack Diner is my feature person for this week. "Gus," as he is known by his friends and neighbors, has been the proprietor of Gus's Adirondack Diner, located at the corner of state Route 86 and the Rainbow Lake Road, for the past six years.

Gus, a lifelong resident of the North Country, has worked in the food service industry the majority of his work life. During his school days, Gus enjoyed playing hockey, evident with the hockey memorabilia displayed in his diner. His diner is also a museum of sorts with photos of various race tracks of the Nascar circuit.

Gus' menu is complete with Adirondack and Italian style, home cooked foods.

Kid's Korner

Summer is about to come to a close and soon it will be the "15th of Redford" then we have to "bank" our homes for winter, some of you parents or grandparents know what I'm talking about here.

But for those of you who don't know, it's tradition for folks of this area to go to the picnic held at St. Mary's in Redford. It is held the weekend closest to the 15th of August.

A major attraction for the day is that they are host and caretakers to one of the oldest operating merry-go-rounds in the world, operated by a pulley off a tractor.

The picnic and auction is to raise money for the St. Mary's School, a worthwhile event. But the event does mark the end of the summer, along with Donnelly's ice cream stand, will soon be closing for the season. And time to return to school.

So, how have you done on writing in your diaries and reading your books? We have done lots of interesting things this summer, I hope you all have a diary full of grand adventures.

I want to thank all my young readers for taking time to read my column, I hope you have enjoyed it. I also hope you continue to read my column when you return to school.
