Adirondack Vacation Guide Summer 2008
32 Enjoy concerts at Loon Lake Live!
Loon Lake Live! will present its 12th season of free classical chamber music concerts in July and August in Saranac Lake and in the rustic and intimate setting of the Jewish Community Center in Loon Lake, a historic vacation community about 20 miles northeast of Saranac Lake.
“Over the years,” said Catherine Beeson, artistic director, “our audiences have nurtured us and watched us grow. We are thrilled to present highly trained, professional artists performing works both new and old.”
Loon Lake Live! presents many of the classic and much-beloved composers of the past, but also regularly features compositions by living and lesser known composers. According to Beeson, the group “believes in innovative programming that is accessible to the entire community and is delivered in a welcoming and educational environment.”
The group began with the sounds of violin and cello on the summer breezes as Wendy Redfield jogged around Loon Lake. Beeson and Sara Fierer were visiting Fierer’s parents at their summer home and doing a little practicing. The jogger reported to her mother, Sarah Redfield, a violist, what she had heard and soon Lori Lax, a professional violinist and long-time summer resident of Loon Lake, was informed. That summer of 1993 the four musicians met occasionally “just for fun.” One concert was given each of the following two summers. When they skipped 1996, people who had enjoyed the previous concerts kept asking when the women would present “their concert.”
In the following years, a decision was made to increase the group and the number of concerts. The 2007 series included four sets of two concerts each, on Sunday and Monday nights, in addition to Saturday morning concerts for children.
Each year up to 20 professional musicians are invited to augment the basic group of Beeson, Fierer and Lax. They each come to Loon Lake for all or part of the three-to-four week program, receiving only food, lodging, a small stipend, and the beautiful Adirondacks as their pay. The musicians eat most of their meals together, taking turns cooking. Rehearsals are usually in the morning and late afternoon, leaving time for hiking, swimming, berry picking and other summer fun.
“The musicians always want to come back to play another year,” says Beeson. “We have a wonderful time playing music and also playing in the summer sun.”
The core of Loon Lake Live! consists of three of the founding members, Lori Lax (viola), Sara Fierer (cello), and Catherine Beeson (violin and viola). Lax was first stand violist in the American Symphony Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski and a teacher at the Manhattan School of Music. She is on the staff of several chamber music festivals. Fierer plays with the Boulder (Colo.) Philharmonic and teaches at the Denver Waldorf School and in her large private studio. Beeson is currently Assistant Principal viola with the Colorado Symphony and performs regularly with “Up Close and Musical” and the Qetzal Quartet.
In addition, two musicians are regular returnees. Stephen Redfield, violinist, is on the faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi and is concertmaster of the Victoria Bach Festival and co-concertmaster of the Santa Fe ProMusica. Jason Gresl, clarinetist, teaches at Andrews University and St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Ind., and is education director for the South Bend Symphony.
Loon Lake Live! has presented concerts at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, the Chateaugay Town Hall, Chapel Island, Cobble Spring Farm in Bloomingdale, Harrietstown Town Hall, First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid Synagogue, Plattsburgh United Methodist Church and Berkeley Green in Saranac Lake. The group is particularly proud of their “Family Fun” series, held on Saturday mornings at the Saranac Lake Free Library, and devoted to “sharing classical music to stimulate and nurture the next generation.” All the concerts have been presented free of cost, with donations gladly accepted.
By donating concerts or partnering to create concerts, Loon Lake Live! has joined with the Village of Saranac Lake, Saranac Lake Young Arts Association, Historic Saranac Lake, the Loon Lake Homeowners Association and the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks to bring classical chamber music to the North County. The group is substantially supported by private donations, most of them small amounts from individuals. They also have received funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks, Stewarts Shops and the Jacob Burns Foundation.
