OTTAWA — Taylor Wright-Sanson, a part-time Wilmington resident and Northern Lights School alumnus, took first place competing at the Ottawa Unicycle Invasion competition held May 24-25.

The only United States citizen entered in this international competition, Wright-Sanson defeated more than 60 competitors from all over Canada to take the top prize in the Trials event.

Although less known, Trials unicycle competitions are similar to BMX Bike Trials competitions.

In the Ottawa competition, unicycle riders competed on an obstacle course made up of 30 “lines”. Each “line” is a small obstacle problem to navigate ranging from easy, lower elements like riding a distance of eight feet along a 1-inch board, to expert elements that require the competitor to climb, jump, and hop obstacles up to 6 feet high and 6 feet apart.

The unicyclist completing the most “lines” is declared the winner. Wright-Sanson won by completing 25 out of 30 lines. One of the lines he successfully navigated — a steeply inclined board going up to a 6-foot platform — had not been completed by any competitor for two years.

Wright-Sanson can be seen unicycling in Saratoga this summer when Circus Smirkus makes a stop in Saratoga Springs to present four shows on July 8 and 9.

This will be Taylor’s third summer performing with Circus Smirkus, America’s award winning traveling youth circus. The youth performers are selected through a challenging audition process. This year’s troupe is comprised of 27 13-18 year olds from Hawaii, Colorado, Washington, France, Ethiopia, Colombia, Missouri, Massachusetts, New Hampshire , Idaho, Maine, California, Connecticut, Vermont and New York.

Circus Smirkus will travel throughout the Northeast performing over 70 shows in July and August raising money for not-for-profits.

Taylor is a sophomore at the Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs. He is a member of the school’s juggling club and is headed to Lusanne, Switzerland for his junior year as part of the school’s foreign exchange program.
