Warm response to a cold dip

POSTED: May 9, 2008

To the editor,

The Lake Placid Middle School Builders Club would like to thank the following people and organizations for their generous support of our first annual “Plunge for a Cause” on April 29, 2008. With the support of our sponsors we have $1,850 in pledges. The proceeds from this event will benefit the Tri-Lakes Humane Society and the High Peaks Hospice. The Builders Club will purchase a new computer for the Humane Society and make a cash donation to the High Peaks Hospice.

We wish to thank our school superintendent, Dr. Ernie Stretton, who gave approval to our idea and plunged right in with us. We also wish to thank the village and town boards along with Supervisor Roby Politi and Mayor James Rogers for authorizing the use of the Mirror Lake beach. We want to thank the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department and its Cold Water Rescue Team for their supervision and participation, as well as the EMT team of the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance. We wish to thank the local police department and our lifeguards, Shannon and Colin Delaney. All of these people helped to ensure this was a safe event. We never would have been able to do it without their help. The water was 38 degrees and truly cold enough to stop anyone’s heart!

We want to thank Greg Moore at Bear Essentials for donating the embroidery on the towels that we gave to participants. We want to thank the Kiwanis Club of Lake Placid for their sponsorship toward the towel purchase and their generous commitment in coming as volunteers to the event. We wish to thank Starbucks for the awesome hot chocolate and Dunkin’ Donuts for the delicious coffee. We would like to thank Price Chopper for their gift card, which we used for the “outrageous costume” prize.

And most of all we want to thank our parents for getting us there, cheering us on and taking us home for hot showers — did we happen to mention the water was really cold?

Thank you, everyone.
