Red Storm defeats EKMW in track and field

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake track and field team notched a sweep of the unified Elizabethtown, Keene, Moriah and Westport team on its home turf Thursday.

The Red Storm girls squad defeated the visitors 97-26, while the boys posted a 75-39 win.

“Today was a great day for our track team,” said boys coach Bill Wilson. “Many personal bests were achieved, as we were much more prepared for competition. The team has started to feel more confident with their abilities and are feeling better about experimenting with new events.”

In the girls competition, Saranac Lake junior Corinne Becker tied the school record in the 100-meter sprint. Finishing in 12.5 seconds, Becker now shares the record with Laura Snizek. She also took first place in the 200m, coming in at 28.1 seconds.

Also in the 100m, Nikki Trudeau took third place for Saranac Lake in 13.5 seconds. The 7th grader took first place in the 800m as well, finishing in 2 minutes and 48 seconds.

In the 110m hurdles the Red Storm took first and second, as senior Liz Mills posted a time of 20.8 seconds and senior Erin Tuthill had a 21.7.

Tuthill also claimed first place in the high jump, clearing 4 feet and 4 inches. She took third place in the 400m hurdles in 1:28.3.

Saranac Lake captured first and second place in the 1,500m, with 8th-grader Michelle Oberding posting a time of 6 minutes and 6.7 seconds and senior Tabitha Leahy finishing in 6:14.8.

Hannah Sporn took first place in the 400m hurdles, finishing in 1 minute and 14.2 seconds. The Red Storm senior also had a second-place finish in the 200m with a 28.3, and third in the high jump at 4’2”.

In the 800m, Saranac Lake sophomore Maya Corell finished second in 2 minutes and 50.6 seconds.

Saranac Lake had an impressive day in the throwing events, as the girls claimed first, second and third places in both the shotput and discus competitions.

Ashleigh Kuma had a solid outing as she posted first place in both the shotput and discus. The Red Storm senior tossed for 26 feet and 10 inches in the shotput and had a 79’2.75” in the discus.

Sophomore Alexis Smith had two second places in the shotput and discus, throwing for 24’10” in the shotput and 65’ in the discus.

Mariah Sutliffe, a sophomore, posted a distance of 20’11” in the shotput for third place.

The Red Storm swept the long jump, as 8th-grader MacKenzie Cotter took first with a distance of 13’7”. Freshman Jackie Dubee had second with 13’6”, and sophomore Shannon Kelly claimed third with 13’.

In the triple jump, Mills had second place in 26’9.25”. Sophomore Mallory Cotter was third in the triple jump with a distance of 26’9”.

Saranac Lake senior Kieranna Hough rounded out the jumping events, taking third with a 4’2”.

In relay action, the Saranac Lake girls took first in the 3,200m and 400m, and finished second in the 1,600m.

The team of Gracey Frenette, Geanette Orton, Kiersten Davieu and Andrea Nye won the 3,200m in 12 minutes and 24.8 seconds.

Sporn, Cotter, Dubee and Becker finished in 53.6 seconds in the 400m relay. Anastasia Brush, Trudeau, Frenette and Oberding had a time of 5 minutes and 1 second in the 1,600m relay.

Ben LeBlanc had four first place finishes to lead the Saranac Lake boys to victory Thursday. The junior posted a time of 11.7 seconds in the 100m sprint, and finished the 400m in 58.9.

LeBlanc teamed up with Kurt Casler, Travis Wood and Keenan Neigel to take fist in the 400m relay in 48.5 seconds. LeBlanc, Casler, Dylan Dawson and Jordan Bryant took first in the 1,600m relay in 4 minutes and 13.9 seconds.

Saranac Lake’s Ben Ponce put in a strong effort in the throwing events, taking first place in both the shotput and discus competitions. The sophomore threw for 38’6” in the shotput and 100’2” in the discus.

Sophomore Dan Farrell claimed second place in the shotput with a distance of 31’5.5”.

Bryant, a Red Storm senior, took first place in the 1,600m with a time of 5 minutes and 20.9 seconds.

Senior Sam Racette captured first place in the 400m hurdles in 1:10.4. He was also first in the triple jump with a distance of 33’8” and second in the 110m hurdles in 20.4 seconds.

In the long jump, freshman Forrest Morgan took first place with 16’1”. He took second place in the 400m in 60.8 seconds.

Saranac Lake freshman Chris Cerminara finished second in the 200m in 26.2 seconds.

Travis wood, a Red Storm junior, was third in the 100m in 12.1 seconds.

In the 3,200 relay, the Saranac Lake team of Eamon Kemp, Bryant, Dawson and Daviau finished first in 10 minutes and 11.6 seconds.

Both the Red Storm boys and girls will be back in action on Tuesday, May 13, when they host Saranac Central.
