2008 Great Adirondack Young People’s Poetry Contest winners announced

POSTED: May 6, 2008
LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Institute for Arts and Humanities recently announced the winners of the 2008 Great Adirondack Young People’s Poetry Contest

This has been a banner year for the LPI’S annual Young People’s Poetry Contest. The winning poems were selected by Roger Mitchell from more than 800 entries submitted by students in grades one through 12 from all over the Adirondacks.

Mitchell, author of nine books of poetry and one nonfiction work, for which he was made honorary citizen of the town of North Hudson, lives in Jay with his wife, fiction writer Dorian Gossy. He is the recipient of many awards including the Midland Poetry Award, the John Ben Snow Award and the Akron prize in Poetry.

The public is invited to the awards ceremony at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. Admission is free.

The LPI is granting three scholarships for high school students to attend the Young Writer’s Conference, a spring writing workshop on the beautiful campus of Champlain College in Burlington, Vt. For dedicated young writers, this is a chance to meet others who share their passion and to study the craft with some of the area’s most celebrated authors and teachers.

This contest is made possible with a lead grant from the Lake Placid Education Foundation and generous support from The Arts Council of the Northern Adirondacks and Stewarts Shops, Inc.

The three scholarship winners are:

Whitney Troutman, “Spiral to Wednesday” — Whitehall High School; teacher, Mrs. Ringer

Martha McKinley, “Dreams” — Westport Central School; teacher, Mr. Scott Gibbs

Kristen Linder, “Farewell Mountain” — Westport Central School; teacher, Mr. Scott Gibbs
